POLG Foundation at EUROMIT 2026
It was an honour for the POLG Foundation team to attend EUROMIT 2026, the world’s largest international conference dedicated to mitochondrial medicine and research, held this year in the beautiful city of Angers, France.
The conference brought together an extraordinary global community, with 865 participants from more than 40 countries, over 500 scientific posters, and more than 70 expert speakers. The event showcased the latest advances in mitochondrial research and provided an invaluable opportunity for collaboration across academia, industry, and patient advocacy.
We were delighted to see Dr Brian Tseng, Luca Bollinger, Adarsh Karanth and Catherine Vassallo representing The POLG Foundation and helping to facilitate important discussions between pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology organisations, and researchers. These conversations are essential in building the partnerships needed to accelerate progress towards effective treatments for POLG-related disorders.
A particular highlight of the conference was hosting our inaugural PIONEER (POLG Prospective International Natural History Endeavor) breakfast meeting. This gathering brought together clinicians, researchers, and patient representatives from around the world to discuss the future of POLG research and strengthen international collaboration.
The PIONEER natural history study represents a critical milestone in advancing our understanding of POLG-related disorders. By establishing a clearer picture of disease progression, the study will help inform future clinical trial design, identify meaningful biomarkers, and create a stronger foundation for therapeutic development. This achievement has only been possible through the dedication, collaboration, and outstanding commitment of all stakeholders involved.
The progress seen at EUROMIT 2026 was particularly encouraging. Just three years ago, POLG was minimally represented at the last Euromit conference in Bologna. This year, the breadth of POLG-focused presentations, scientific posters, and emerging research findings demonstrated the remarkable momentum that has been generated across the field. Several significant scientific advances were presented, reflecting the growing recognition of POLG disease and the urgent need for continued research investment.
The POLG Foundation is proud to play a catalytic role in bringing together researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and families to drive progress forward. We are grateful to have been part of this landmark event and to stand alongside a global community committed to improving outcomes and creating a brighter future for everyone affected by POLG mitochondrial disease.
